“We need investment in specific topics like special crops, new crops, value systems that involve farmers,” Matthias Krön, President of Donau Soja, says in this video from a question during a webinar on a discussion of the need for more research and budgets for plant-based foods to help accelerate the shift to sustainable food systems.
“First and foremost, research needs to focus on taste and sensory,” added Michel Mellema, Global Innovation Director Re-Imagine Protein at International Flavors & Fragrances. “Sensory is not always seen as a serious academic topic yet.”
Krön and Mellema will be continuing the discussion on Value Chain Research Investments during our Plant-Based Foods & Proteins Summit Europe, 21-23 June in the Netherlands. Mellema will be chair of Track IV which will be focused exclusively on the topic.

It was part of a joint initiative led by Bridge2Food and the European Alliance for Plant-Based Foods (EAPF), as a coalition of more than 60 organisations calls on the European Commission to increase Horizon Europe R&I funds for plant-based foods. As part of this initiative the two organizations released a joint letter and a joint paper. As well, 11 thought-leaders created videos discussing the need for increased funding, watch here.
