We are proud that, together with European Alliance for Plant-Based Foods (EAPF), we are leading a coalition of 63 organisations calling on the European Commission to increase Horizon Europe funding for plant-based foods. This is essential to accelerate the shift to sustainable & healthy food systems.
Focus and funding were deemed essential to advancing the R&I agenda in a webinar with Siska Pottie, secretary general of EAPF, Gerard Klein Essink, CEO of Bridge2Food, and seven top leaders. Read about the event and watch the webinar video here.
As part of the initiative we have released a joint letter, a joint paper and key stakeholders will gather at the Plant-Based Foods & Proteins Summit Europe in June to help define a research investment agenda.
Leading up to the summit, experts from across Europe, and from farm to fork, explain the investment need in this video series:
June 9 — Nuria Moreno, secretary-general of Euvepro
In her video, Moreno talks about how plant-based proteins are crucial in the shift to more balanced diets. The EC can be supportive by implementing a European-wide protein strategy, which will enhance the cultivation and production of plant-based proteins for food use.
April 7 — Lorena Savani, innovation program manager with EIT Food
In her video, Savani says plant-based foods and proteins are important for three aspects: environment, health and food security, and the EC can be supportive by ensuring a clear, transparent and efficient regulatory landscape.
March 31 — Geertrui Bosmans, research manager baked products, Puratos
In her video, Bosmans talks about how more research targeting plant ingredients is needed to increase plant-based diets and how the European Commision can offer support by implementing a regulatory framework for the sector.
March 24 — Bruno Gehin, global new protein projects leader, Roquette.
In his video, Gehin discusses how plant-based foods are key to supporting the food revolution we are facing globally and the need for motivating programs to develop a sustainable food system.
March 10 — Philppe Mengal, executive director, Circular Bio-based Industries Joint Undertaking.
Learn more in his video about how CBE_JU supports innovative solutions for a plant-rich diet and how bio-based industries will help Europe become the world’s first climate-neutral continent.
March 3 — Jasmijn De Boo, vice-president, ProVeg International.
In her video, De Boo discusses the need to redirect EU funding to plant-based production methods to slow down current environmental impacts and seize opportunities.
Feb. 24 — Michel Mellema, head of science & technology, the Vegetarian Butcher, part of Unilever.
In his video, Mellema discusses the importance of collaboration and how the European Commission needs to be supportive of commercial efforts by breaking down regulatory and financial barriers, especially for farmers and startups.
Feb. 17 — Alice Ravenscroft, head of policy, Good Food Institute Europe
In her video, Ravenscroft talks about how the science is clear on the need to transition to plant-rich diets and why the European Commission should be supportive with funding for open-access research.
Feb. 10 — Francisco Guerreiro, Member of the European Parliament
In his video, Guerreiro talks about why the transition to plant-based foods and proteins is important for our emissions footprint and animal welfare.
Feb. 3 — Gerard Klein Essink, CEO and founder of Bridge2Food
In his video, Klein Essink discusses the role of the value chain in the protein transition and the R&D budget needed to accelerate this transition.
Jan. 27 — Siska Pottie, secretary general of EAPF
Learn more in her video about why the shift to plant-based diets is so crucial and how the European Commission and its funding programs can be supportive.
