The Role of Accelerators in the Food & AgTech Space. Jan Meiling (StartLife)

Jan Meiling, Managing Director of StartLife, a startup incubator and accelerator with a prime focus on Food & Agtech, will be presenting the talk “How Accelerators Contribute to Disrupting Food & AgTech space” at the 14th Plant-Based Foods Summit Europe 2019 in Lille, France, on 2-4 October 2019.

On 3 October, he shares his vision on Protein Transition and Plant-Based Foods and also will be taking part in the Panel Discussion ‘Role of New Protein Sources & Technologies for the Future of Food’.

StartLife runs local, national and international programs providing coaching and funding and also has a unique network of program and corporate partners.

What can you tell us about the content of your presentation and your experiences?

We will present an insightful view on innovations coming from startups and the role of accelerators and investors contributing to the protein transition.

What is the role of your organisation can play in the protein transition?

We expect startups to play a crucial role in changing the supply, processing and application of novel protein sources. Eventually larger corporates will also prove to be crucial to truly scale up many of these innovations. As StartLife, with its support and network structure, we are taking responsibility to be a significant facilitator of this protein revolution bringing together entrepreneurs, technology, funding and market access.

Which eco-systems for protein research exist in your view? And what is their power?

Foodvalley NL, together with the Dutch provinces of Gelderland and Overijssel and Oost NL, have established a powerful platform called The Protein Cluster (TPC). TPC is the first global platform for ingredient suppliers, food manufacturers and other stakeholders seeking ready to use plant-based, vegan or vegetarian solutions. TPC assists present and future suppliers of plant protein ingredients, semi-finished products, consumer products and technologies in developing and commercializing their innovative products.

Furthermore, Wageningen University & Research is recognized as a cutting edge knowledge generator that regularly produces excellent business opportunities for spinoffs promoting the protein transition.

Only last year the Wageningen Meat replacer scaleup Ojah was acquired by Kerry, thus bringing exciting new plant based products to an even larger audience.

What is needed to raise the bar and accelerate the uptake of plant proteins in foods, petfood and aquaculture?

Taste, price and functionality are key. All businesses should focus more heavily on these three aspects.

How do you see the plant-based food market growing?

With relation to consumer products, we are happy to see that consumer demand and awareness is rising. The latter is an essential prerequisite for success!
