The Bio-Based Industries(BBI) Joint Undertaking, the public private partnership between the Biobased Industry Consortium and the European Commission, has again approved two protein innovation projects. Mrs. Sarah Black, Communications Officer at BBI, explained that three projects have been approved since this €3.7billion funding programme started in 2014. The new projects are called GreenProtein and InDIRECT. The focus on GreenProtein is on producing high-added value, food-grade and fully functional proteins and other food ingredients, out of vegetable residues from packed salad processing. Starting date is 1 September 2016 and end date is 28 February 2019.
There is a €4.2million BBI JU contribution. The partners are Nederlandse Oranisatie voor Toegepast Natuurwetenschappelijk Onderzoek TNO (TNO). Florette France Gms (Florette), Ruitenberg Ingredients B.V. (Ruitenberg), Bionet Servicios Tecnicos Sl (Bionet), Institut National De La Recherche Agronomique (Inra), Eurizon Sl (Eurizon), Pazmany Peter Katolikus Egyetem (Ppke), and Fakultet Za Poslovno Industrijski Menadzment (Fbim)
The InDIRECT project aims to contribute to a post-petroleum society by exploring the potential of bio-refinery approaches for waste recycling and re-use goals. InDIRECT proposes new value chains for transforming agricultural and other side-streams into marketable products (and energy) via a cascading bio-refinery approach, in a sustainable way, resulting in a significant reduction of greenhouse gases emissions. Starting date 1 November 2016 and ending date 31 October 2019. There is a € 1,3 Million BBI JU contribution. The partners are: VITO, Nutrition Sciences NV (Nu Sciences NV), Universita Degli Studi di Parma (Unipr), Millibeter (Millibeter), Institut Mutualise pour les Proteines Vegetales (Improve), Boerenbondvereniging voor Projecten Vzw (BB Projecten), Chemstream BVBA (Chemstream Bvba), Proti Farm R & D BY (Proti-Farm), Temperio (Temperio)

Through the BBI JU call the strategic innovation and research agenda will encourage ground-breaking R&D, and provide funding for proof of concept demonstrators, and scaling up for fully industrialised, streamlined, production models in Europe.
