Buhler insect pilot plant in China

Protein meals derived from insects offer great potential to partly replace fishmeal in feed formulations for aquaculture. The Bühler AG ( set up a pilot facility with a partner in China for processing fly larvae on an industrial scale. Besides the insect meal the process also delivers a high-grade fat with properties similar to those of palm kernel oil. One key element of the solution is an efficient dryer resulting in larvae with moisture levels below 12% to obtain a reasonable shelf-life.
